The Sidney Reyes Memorial Scholarship and the Harmon Byrd Memorial Scholarship for graduating Frederick County high school seniors

The Frederick County Democratic Committee is honoring the memory of two civic leaders with two scholarships: The Sidney Reyes Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) and the Harmon Byrd Memorial Scholarship ($500).
 
Criteria for both scholarships:
 
1. The applicant must be projected to graduate from a Frederick County, Virginia High School in the spring of 2011.

2. Civic responsibility as demonstrated by active involvement with civic, charitable, and Democratic Party organizations.  Examples could include working on campaigns, promoting political/social causes, assistance in fund raising activities, and participating in other volunteer activities.

3. A cumulative High School Grade Point Average of “B” or higher.

4. A letter of recommendation from a teacher, attesting to the student’s potential for successful academic performance at the college level.

5. A letter of recommendation from a member of one of the types of organizations referred to in item 2 above, describing the students work with that organization.

An additional requirement for the Sidney Reyes Memorial Scholarship is the submission of an essay on the topic:

How to improve voter turnout and voter awareness of the important issues facing our country.


Applicants may apply for both scholarships with one application; however, an essay must be submitted to be considered for the Sidney Reyes Memorial Scholarship. 

The application deadline is April 20, 2011.
